Textiles from Bhiwandi
Bhiwandi has a long history of textiles. The textile story begins when the first loom were brought to the area around 1927, before then textiles were made by hand. Yarn dyes were obtained by natural means until the introduction of artificial colors. Textiles that were woven by hand were strong colorful and sturdy. Weaving is one of the textiles that make this area so popular and unique. Cloth is also produced here with the cotton crop that grows so well. It starts out by being corded and spun into yarn. The next step is to turn the yarn into cloth. This is where the looms come in. Turning yarn into cloth by loom is faster than doing it by hand but in some ways it is better done by hand. Either way stunning textiles are produced and designed by weavers and designers across the region. Then the cloth takes form as fabric and is magically transformed into various textiles such as clothing, rugs, weavings, etc.  This is a powerhouse in action.

This is where, in the 1950’s hand made saris were made and made the region famous for this particular textile. Saris, the major item in any Indian lady's wardrobe are just a small piece of the textile market in Bhiwandi. The region has a good textile service industry also, which includes import/export and distributorship. This is the leading employer of this region. There are many textile houses, designers and distributors in this area along with export companies, that relate primarily to the textile manufacturing. This is one of the region's best moneymakers. Its textile industry is growing at a healthy rate and doesn’t show signs of stopping anytime soon. Many are employed by the textile industry in one-way or another. No matter what the jobs of the textile industry, there are people working at those jobs day and night.

With all the textile industry that is around this region, one might ask are these the only types of textiles being manufactured here? The answer is no. There are other textiles such as coverings for furniture, rugs, drapes and even a bit of Jute items that are manufactured here. This is an industry that seems to be taking over from where other nations have stopped, and just keeps right on going strong. The colors are bright and colorful in the textiles, no matter what they are.

A more colorful array of textiles has not been seen in a while. The colors dazzle the eye and tempt it. In your minds eye, imagine these beautiful textiles calling to you, “Ain't I beautiful? Won’t I look good on you?” That is indeed what these cotton marvels are saying and the market for these wonderful pieces is growing. The cognoscenti and lovers of finery, will hopefully one day restore the lost pride of Bhiwandi. Do buy one of the hand crafted, dyed with natural colors and made with love cotton cloth when you visit this Loom City; a gesture which will support the tradition and those who are keeping it alive.
